This type of bloom is caused by a species of dinoflagellate known as Karenia brevis, and these blooms occur almost annually along Florida waters. The density of

The red tide in California is called Alexandrium tamarense. This red tide glows bright blue at night, and looks similar to the bioluminescence in Florida.

Dinoflagellates red tide

Dinoflagellates are relatively easy to maintain at home, requiring as little care as a houseplant, except that these "plants" produce bright blue light when shaken at night. For more technical culturing information, we have another page about Growing Dinos in the Lab Also see our page documenting a red tide of dinoflagellates.

This “bloom” may be caused by nutrient and hydrographic conditions, although the environmental conditions which result in red tides are not completely understood. Red tides are a phenomenon of discoloration of sea surface. It is a common name for harmful algal blooms occurring along coastal regions, which are resulted from large concentrations of aquatic microorganisms, such as protozoans and unicellular algae (e.g. dinoflagellates and diatoms).

The most dramatic effect of dinoflagellates on life around them comes from the coastal marine species which "bloom" during the warm months of summer. These species reproduce in such great numbers that the water may appear golden or red, producing a "red tide". Red tide, discoloration of sea water usually caused by dinoflagellates, during periodic blooms (or population increases).
Wuornos last words

Red tide is a specific term for one type of an aquatic phenomenon generally called an algal bloom—an unexplained increase in the number of microscopic organisms. These organisms are called dinoflagellates, and are a type of phytoplankton that live in marine and freshwater habitats.

They can form so‐called ‘red tides’ in coastal waters, a name that was given because of the changes in water colour observed at times. 2020-02-06 2018-12-04 red tides dominated by the red-tide dinoflagellate, and the related management strategies should be adjusted to reflect these facts. However, mixotrophy in many red-tide dinoflagellate species have been not explored yet, even though these dinoflagellates have formed huge red tides … There are some dinoflagellates which are parasites on fish or on other protists.
